Chapter Six

Annabelle woke with a start.

She could hear someone cluttering about in another room. She opened one eye, but didn’t recognize where she was. She rolled onto her other side and it all came flooding back to her. The thoughts not all bad.

Last night with Harrison had been special. He’d promised to be gentle with her, and he was. Their coupling was not what she’d expected – it was far better.

She felt her face flush at her wicked thoughts. Would everyone in town know they’d... Oh goodness, she did not want to think about it.

“Good, you’re awake.” He came and sat on the edge of the bed, as close to her as he could get, then leaned in and kissed her on the lips. “Breakfast is ready.”

She sat up abruptly. “That’s my job.” She’d gone from blissfully happy one minute, to totally annoyed the next.

He chuckled, and pulled her against his chest. “Today I make breakfast. After that...” He kissed her forehead. “It is totally yours, dear Annabelle.”

She listened to his heart beating as she leaned against him. She’d never heard anything so wonderful before. Her arms slid up around him, and he held her tighter. “Last night was wonderful,” she whispered, then clamped her mouth shut. She sounded so wanton. What man would want his wife to be that way?

He pushed her back a little and stared into her face, then grinned. “I’m so glad. Tonight we get to do it all again.”

She wasn’t sure how to answer, so just nodded. His fingers went under her chin, and he leaned in again and kissed her briefly. “Time for breakfast, before it goes cold.” He pulled back the covers and stared. “Or perhaps not, he said, a grin on his face.

When the cold air suddenly hit, Annabelle realized she was stark naked. She watched as Harrison began to unbutton his shirt.

She was not unhappy about this turn of events.

When he finally climbed back out of bed, Harrison looked far more relaxed than he had last night. He was a wonderful man and she was pleased she chose well. Except she didn’t. She just grabbed a letter and didn’t bother to read it until she’d arrived in Grand Falls. She was very lucky things had worked out for her. They could have gone completely the other way.

She thought for a moment.

No, that would never have been the case. Martha Swanson at the bridal agency vetted every potential groom. She insisted on a letter from the local pastor to ensure the men were decent and upstanding in the community.

She wondered for just a moment where she might have ended up if not here. As quickly as it entered her head, she shook it away. Harrison was a wonderful person, and a great husband.

After dressing, he wandered to her side of the bed. “Here, put this on,” he said, holding out her nightgown. “You are far too much temptation for me like that.” He grinned and slipped the gown over her head. “Where is your robe?” He glanced about the room.
